Besides Polio, Pakistan is also one of the few countries that still have people infected with Thalassemia. It is a blood disorder, often inherited in which a baby is born with a lower level of hemoglobin due to the absence of some essential proteins. Because of the scarcity of hemoglobin and proteins, the oxygen-carrying capacity of the body is reduced which further leads to variable symptoms.

Where Thalassemia is globally divided into two types, Beta and Alpha, Pakistan predominantly has the Beta type that accumulates Thalassemia minor and major. Around 6% of Pakistan’s population has Thalassemia minor. However, if both parents are infected with Thalassemia minor, their child will probably have Thalassemia major which is more severe and its patients need transfusion on a regular basis in order to survive.
