Zardari springs into action, seeks report on Thar situation

KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Friday directed the elected representatives of Tharparkar to submit a report on the situation in the drought-stricken district. 

The former president met the Sindh chief minister’s special assistant on human rights Dr Khatomal and got briefing on the Thar situation.

In his remarks, he said the government will resolve the Thar crisis on a priority basis, adding that he will soon visit the drought-hit areas.

Mr Zardari, whose party is in power in Sindh province,  said the people of Thar will not be left alone to fend for themselves at a time of need and directed the provincial government to make all humanly possible efforts to provide them relief.

Dr Khatomal said Tharparkar will continue to reel under drought-like situation until canal water is made available in the region.

Meanwhile,  Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar heard a case related to the drought situation in Tharparkar at the apex court’s Karachi registry.

He issued directives for the authorities concerned to take substantial steps to  improve miserable situation in Thar. 

CJP Nisar was informed that distribution of wheat is ongoing in the region and special nutrition package is also being provided to address the issue of malnutrition.
