KARACHI: A sessions court directed police to incorporate the relevant section of the anti-terror law into the FIR registered against former PML-N loyalist Nehal Hashmi over his incendiary and threatening rant against the judiciary and Panama joint investigation team (JIT).
This direction came in the wake of a police report which stated that Hashmi’s speech attracted the Section 7 of the Anti-terrorism Act, 1999 for it was an attempt to create mayhem in the country.
A lawyer had moved the court seeking inclusion of the relevant section of the anti-terror law into the FIR against Hashmi and his trial by an anti-terrorism court.
In his application, the lawyer contended that Hashmi has threatened a section of society and thus he should be tried under the anti-terror law. It was also a settled law that any offence against society comes within ambit of terrorism, he added.
The court had earlier on directed the investigation officer to look into the contention of the lawyer and come up with his report on whether the anti-terror law section could be inserted into the FIR .
Earlier this week it had also approved bail for Hashmi against a surety of Rs50000.
Senator Hashmi had been booked in a case registered at the Bahadurabad police station for threatening the judiciary and the Panama JIT member for holding the prime minister’s family accountable.
The apex court had taken a suo motu notice of the video showing Hashmi making threatening remarks against the Supreme Court and the Panama Joint Investigation Team (JIT).
Meanwhile, Hashmi petitioned the apex court seeking to quash the case against him. The court was pleaded to restrain trial court from proceeding against him until the disposal of his petition.
