Sartaj says no understanding reached with Afghanistan over border management

He made the disclosures during a briefing session at the National Assembly.  He said that there was already a check post at Torkam border, and a gate was present at the location since 2004.

Aziz  vowed that they will continue the construction work at the border gate despite the volatile situation and the hostility shown by Afghanistan.

Aziz said that they had informed the Afghan authorities over the construction of the gate and that Pakistan has not violated any bilateral agreement between the two countries.

Aziz said that border management was important for both countries and there will be no compromise on it.

Ceasefire

After four days of deadly clashes at Torkham border, Pakistan and Afghanistan border officials agreed to a ceasefire on Wednesday following which the Afghan officials waved white flags on their side.

Meanwhile, the construction work on Torkham gate has also been started after the announcement of a ceasefire.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif in a statement in Senate said that Pakistan is determined for effective border management with Afghanistan for the sake of peace and security in the region. He said the government has been in talks with the Afghan government over one year to ensure better management of the border in order to stop infiltration of militants from both sides.

Earlier, Foreign Office spokesman Nafees Zakaria in his weekly briefing in Islamabad said Pakistan’s border management efforts are part of counter-terrorism actions.

He said the Durand Line has been a settled issue between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He said that Afghans are being misguided by those elements which do not want peace in Afghanistan.
