Torture victim child maid Tayyaba recovered from Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Police on Sunday recovered Tayyaba — the child maid allegedly tortured by her influential employers, a judge and his wife — and her parents in an operation from Islamabad, ARY News reported.

Police have taken her along her parents into custody and shifted them to an undisclosed ‘safe place’. Sources said Tayyaba’s close relatives, residing in a suburban area of the capital themselves, handed her over to police.

Tayyaba’s family in Jaranwala, a city in the Faisalabad District of Punjab, had left their ancestral home along the 10-year-old following which raids were being conducted in a bid to find the whereabouts of the girl at the earliest.

Meanwhile, police arrested a man, Anwar, whose mother reportedly sent Tayyaba to the judge’s house as a maid. The girl’s paternal aunt was also taken into custody for interrogation.

Chief Justice Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar on Friday ordered a full probe into allegations that the 10-year-old girl working as a maid was tortured by her employers.

He also ordered the police to find and bring the child into court next week.

Adding to the confusion, two women previously unheard of appeared before the top court on Friday, each claiming the girl in question is their child. The judge later requested DNA tests.

The case has shocked and captivated many in Pakistan after disturbing photographs of the girl, purporting to show her badly beaten and bruised, circulated on social media.
