KARACHI: Two militants involved in multiple terrorism acts escaped from Karachi’s central prison, ARY News reported on Thursday.

Mamtaz alias Firo’n and Muhammad Ahmed Khan alias Munna said to be associated with Naeem Bukhari group of banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, had escaped from Karachi Central Jail, confirmed the prison authorities who were not sure about the exact date of their escape.

Following the news about two prisoners’ escape emerged police conducting raids in different areas of the metropolis to arrest them, officials said.

The escape of the two high-profile under-trial prisoners has raised serious concerns about the security of the prison which housed a large number of hardened criminals including hardcore terrorists. The law enforcement agencies had tightened security of the jail in the wake of the inmates’ escape from the prison over the past few years.

The counter terrorism department (CTD) officials said they were making all-out efforts to nab fugitives as they were checking out details of the inmates’ meeting at the prison and other inmates were also being questioned to elicit information about the escaped prisoners.

Meanwhile, police had conducted raids in the city’s Korangi and Orangi neighborhoods where suspected militants’ residences are located.

It is pertinent to mention here that the jail was claimed to be safeguarded heavily by the authorities to foil attempts of escape including the October 2014 operation by the Rangers to find a 45-metre-long tunnel being built just a few metres from the prison to facilitate escape of several dangerous militants imprisoned in the jail.
