US felicitates Arif Alvi on becoming new president

WASHINGTON: The United States (US) has felicitated Dr Arif Alvi on becoming the new president of Pakistan. 

US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauret in a statement said Washington looks forward to working with Islamabad to advance “our shared interests, such as regional peace, stability, and prosperity.”

Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar administered oath to newly elected President Arif Alvi at a ceremony held at President House on Sunday.

Mr Alvi, who was clad in traditional black sherwani, promised allegiance to Pakistan and to carry out his duties in the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well-being and prosperity of the country.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjrani and National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser were among the guests who attended the oath-taking ceremony.

Subsequently, a smartly dressed contingent of armed forces present a guard of honour to the new president at the Presidency.
