Won't support any constitutional amendment to save Sharif: Khursheed

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Wednesday said that the PML-N-led government wants to do away with the constitutional provisions that led to the dismissal of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, ARY News reported.

“The government aims to amend the Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution just to save Sharif,” he said and reiterated that his party will not allow the government to tinker with the constitution just to save one person.

A day before, Law Minister Zahid Hamid had said the government is considering to amend Articles 62, 63 of the Constitution while working on the proposed amendment and its legal aspects has been underway.

Speaking during the National Assembly session on Tuesday, the minister said the government believed that the period of a lawmaker’s ineligibility should be less than current five years.

The Article 62 and 63 stipulates that a parliamentarian should be Sadiq (truthful) and Ameen (trustworthy).

The minister’s remarks came days after disqualification of Nawaz Sharif by the Supreme Court for not being honest for concealing his salary from a Dubai-based company owned by his son.

The minister said the proposed draft of constitutional amendment would be referred to a respective committee of the House for review before it finally sails through.

The new amendment could be enforced with a retrospective effect so as to reduce ineligibility period of deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
