‘The Five Heartbeats’ actor Michael Wright passes away at 70

At the age of 70, Michael Wright, best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Eddie King Jr. in the cult movie The Five Heartbeats, has passed away. In an Instagram post on Friday, his wife, Susan Wright, confirmed his passing; the cause of death has not been made public.
Throughout his nearly fifty-year career, he starred in numerous movies and TV series, including the 1983 drama Streamers, for which he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. However, his most famous performance was in Robert Townsend’s 1991 musical drama The Five Heartbeats.
In a 2021 interview with Sheen, Wright reflected on his long career, stating that he was fortunate to have fulfilled many of his life’s desires. “I’ve done everything I have wanted to do,” he remarked, adding, “I’ve been everywhere, I speak five different languages, I have seen the world, and I love my experiences.”
Fans and admirers began posting memorials online after learning of his passing. Honoring the legend’s legacy in the entertainment industry, author Jermaine Watkins posted on X, “Rest in power.”
Another tribute highlighted Wright’s portrayal of Victor Duncan in The Principal, describing the character as “pure intensity” and praising Wright as one of cinema’s most powerful antagonists.
