12th May Carnage: SHC orders security to petitioner

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday adjourned hearing of the 12th May case for an indefinite period and ordered the concerned authorities to provide security to the petitioner of the case, ARY News reported on Monday.

A divisional bench of the Sindh High Court, headed by Justice Ahmed Ali M. Shaikh, heard the case today.

In the hearing, petitioner Iqbal Kazmi stated that he is being threatened to not take the case further since he had filed the petition. He pleaded to the court to provide him security.

The bench, after hearing the statement of the petitioner, ordered the government authorities to provide security to Kazmi and adjourned the hearing of the case for an indefinite period.

It is pertinent to mention here that clashes broke out on 12th May 2007 among the armed workers of rival political parties in Karachi as more than fifty people were killed and scores of others were injured on the occasion of the then deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s visit to the port city.

Opposition parties at that time blamed Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), an ally of then military ruler General Musharraf, for the violence in the city.

Police had submitted a charge-sheet against MQM leader Waseem Akhtar, presently Mayor of Karachi, and other accused in the violent incidents in the city.

Akhtar has been recently released from jail on bail in the case.
