29,000 passports cancelled during re-verification process: Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan says 35 million computerized national identity cards (CNICs) have been verified by the government in the ongoing countrywide drive of CNICs re-verification.
He was speaking during the question hour session in the National Assembly today. Khan told the House that 29,000 passports have been cancelled.
The minister boasted that the authorities had verified a quarter of CNICs out of projected 110 million. “We had been facing criticism over re-verification process of CNICs due to feared red-tape. But we are on track to complete this process in time.”
He said 3.5 million people themselves attempted to get their CNICs vetted.
The interior minister claimed that many of those killed in drone strikes had their identity cards made in Pakistan in 2004.
“Several family trees have thousands of foreigners registered under them. Parliamentary committee can be formed to examine it,” he added.
He insisted that the campaign for re-verification for CNICs was underway and would be completed in time.
The minister informed the legislature he would unveil further stats of re-verification process soon.
