5 Pakistani humanitarians who promote social welfare

1. Shahid Afridi
Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi may have retired from Test matches and One Day Internationals yet he still has not quit from his philanthropic activities. The swashbuckling batsman was recently included among the world’s top 20 charitable athletes. Through the Shahid Afridi Foundation, he has donated generously to establish a charity hospital and most recently contributed Rs 2 million for homeless children at Dar ul Sukoon.
2. Perween Rehman
Director of the Orangi Pilot Project, Perween Rehman had worked tirelessly and fearlessly for the poor people of Karachi (especially Orangi) before she was gunned down by armed assailants. The Orangi Pilot Project was aimed at sheltering the poor in Orangi and providing them with proper housing and sanitation facilities. Perween Rehman died after getting shot on March 13, 2013 and left behind plenty of mourners and well-wishers.
3. Abdul Sattar Edhi
He is the most famous philanthropist and charitable personality from Pakistan. He might be old, weak and frail, yet Abdul Sattar Edhi has always demonstrated unwavering will in alleviating the condition of the poor. Edhi runs the largest ambulance fleet in the world, more than 700 ambulances across Pakistan.
4. Shehzad Roy
Pakistani musician Shehzad Roy is a celebrity for his melodic voice and for the fact that his catchy, pop songs have dominated the charts for long. However, Roy has also never shied away from lending the impoverished a helping hand though his organization Zindagi Trust. The NGO helps to uplift and empower poor children by educating them. Zindagi Trust also lobbies to pressurize the government into taking positive measures for education.
5. Ansar Burney
Former Expert Advisor United Nations on Human Rights and Pakistan’s former Federal Minister for Human Rights, Ansar Burney’s activities speak for themselves. The senior lawyer helps in uniting families through his Ansar Burney Trust. Most recently he has been deeply involved in efforts to reunite 23 year-old Geeta, a displaced Indian girl in Karachi, with her family in India.
