75 crore dollars being spend on EWS, Chairman NDMA

LAHORE: Major General Saeed Aleem, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has said the 75 crore dollars will be spent on the improvement of Early Warning System (EWS), ARY News reports.

Addressing a seminar and speaking to media here on Wednesday, Major General Saeed Aleem had stated that the domestic resources were nearly empty in Awaran whereas the District Disaster Authority (DDA) was also not functional however the resources were mobilized in 24 hours.

Speaking on the 2005 Earthquake relief work, Chairman NDMA stated that the operations went smoothly as they were better prepared.

Major General Saeed Aleem claimed that the authority is working on several short term plans to improve the weather prediction system. In a ten year plan, work is underway on 118 projects by the help of 1 billion dollars in which 75 crore dollars are being spent on National Flood Protection (NFP) plan where 14 crores are being spent Early Warning Plan.

A new weather radar and weather station is also being developed according to the new plan. He stated that several of the new completed projects have helped in dealing with the threats. He stated that not much damage was caused by the rains this year due to the improvements in the advance warning systems as the population of the areas had made to evacuate.
