Investigators ‘clear’ SSP Rao Anwar of wrongdoing in Khawaja Izhar’s arrest

KARACHI: Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Rao Anwar who was suspended on September 16 for briefly arresting Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan leader Khawaja Izharul Haq only to be reinstated after two later, has been cleared of all the charges by a probing team on Wednesday.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had suspended Rao Anwar for allegedly not following due procedures when arresting the MQM Pakistan leader, a charge SSP had rejected and insisted he raided Khawaja Izharul Haq’s residence as per law.

SSP Rao Anwar had challenged his suspension at the Sindh High Court (SHC) following which he was later reinstated on his position on November 19 but was not posted in any area.

However, he continued to face an inquiry which gave him a clear chit of all the charges today.

“SSP Malir Rao Anwar did not take any illegal step” when he tried to take MQM’s Khawaja Izharul Haq in police custody, said the inquiry report.

Khawaja Izharul Haq was arrested only for a short period of time when police personnel raided his residence reportedly in search of a suspect in September. During his televised arrest, the MQM Pakistan leader had maintained had had no idea why the police officials were detaining him.
