ACLC officials remanded in police custody in youth killing case

KARACHI: A local court on Monday remanded eight Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) officials in police custody for seven days for questioning in a case pertaining to the killing of a 19-year-old boy in Karachi’s posh locality.

Intizar Ahmed was shot and killed by armed ACLC personnel upon failure to stop his vehicle after being signaled by them in Defence Housing Authority’s (DHA) Khayaban-i-Bukhari area.

The investigating officer of the case produced Inspector Tariq Mehmood, SHO of ACLC police station, Inspector Azhar Ahsan Rizvi, head constables Ghulam Abbas and Shahid, constables Fawad Khan and three others in the court to seek their physical remand.

The IO told the judge that the custody of accused was required for questioning and identification parade.

He said he had come to know that a girl was accompanying Intezar when he was signaled to stop. Information about the girl had been obtained to record her statement, he added.

While allowing the seven-day physical remand of the suspects, the court directed the IO to present them after expiry of their remand and submit progress report.

A day earlier, the parents of the slain student alleged that the ACLC personnel didn’t open fire at his son with an intention to stop him, but to kill him.

Intizar was their only son and had recently come back from Malaysia, they said.

His father, Ishtiaq Ahmed, appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take cognizance of the incident.

He claimed the police were attempting to present the murder of his son as an accidental death.
