American Girl unveils first-ever boy doll

American Girl, the maker of pricey 18-inch dolls, which has sold over 29 million dolls, has introduced a new boy doll for the first time in its 31-year history.

Logan Everett, with his perfect boy-band brown hair, hipster T-shirt and dark-wash jeans, is no surprise to the world of American Girl. Logan is drummer with his singer-songwriter friend Tenney Grant.

The toy company announced to finally add a male doll to their collection after persistent requests, and decided that 2017 would be the perfect opportunity to introduce its first boy doll with a fun story line and dynamic personality.

Julie Parks, director of public relations at American Girl, told The Huffington Post the company regularly receives feedback from parents and kids asking for characters with “more experiences, more diversity, more interests.”

“Adding a boy to our lineup has been a number one request for a very, very, very long time,” she said.

The company recently revealed the 2017 Girl of the Year, a poet who uses spoken word to overcome her stutter. Later this year, a new Korean-American doll and a  historical Hawaiian character will also hit shelves.

However, a male doll is something both sons and daughters have repeatedly asked for through the years. Parents had even created “American Boys” by cutting their hair and ordering new clothes.

“My son wanted one, so I made one from a Target doll two years ago,” one mom said on Facebook. “Leo is a favorite and plays well with all the American Girl dolls over here!”

“My little boy has been waiting for a boy doll. He is so excited,” one mom commented on Facebook.

Parks said 2017 is a busy time for the company, but this year seemed like the perfect time to answer so many requests from both parents and kids.

“For a long time, we’ve been hearing, ‘We want more,’” she said.

This is the latest push by Mattel, which acquired the doll maker for $700 million in 1998, to create more contemporary figures and stories and diversify the line of the dolls in hopes of improving sales.

It is not usual to spot a male doll in the toy store but this is a welcome addition, provided that parents have the $115 to shell out for each of the American Girl.
