KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants against the absconders in Dr Pervez Mehmood, a former Town Nazim of Liaquatabad affiliated with the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), murder case.
Hearing the murder case of Dr Pervez Mehmood, the court directed the investigation officer to come up with a comprehensive report about the absconders on the next hearing. The court adjourned the hearing till January 16.
The jail officials produced a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) hitman, Masood Ali alias ‘Kala’ before the court today. Police told the court that Masood was an important member of the MQM’s target killer team.
The court was informed that the suspect had confessed the murder of Dr Pervez Mehmood and his fried during the investigations. Police said that the MQM hitman along with his target killer team had gunned down the former town nazim at KDA Chowrangi.
MQM’s then joint sector in-charge Rehan, Asif alias ‘Alto’, Faizan alias Sameer Nai and Shakeel alias ‘Mota’ and others were declared absconders in the murder case, said the police.
Dr Pervez Mehmood was assassinated by a team of target killers on the directions of then Karachi Tanzeemi Committee (KTC) in-charge Hammad Siddiqui, said the police.
Police officials said that Masood Ali alias ‘Kala’ along with his accomplices gunned down many innocent people in different areas of the metropolis on the directions of his party leadership.
The suspect was taken into custody from North Nazimabad on November 30 last year, said the police. It is pertinent to mention here that unidentified armed had men gunned down Dr Pervez Mehmood and his friend in the North Nazimabad area on September 18, 2012.
The incident happened near the KDA Chowrangi in North Nazimabad. Police had said that the JI leader along with his friend were in the North Nazimabad area for some work when attacked by unknown assailants. Investigators had termed the murder of Dr Pervez and his friend as part of target killing.
