Dec 2: Bilawal commemorates Benazir Bhutto's oath as first female PM

KARACHI: This day marks an important political event in Pakistan’s history after Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader Benazir Bhutto took an oath to become the country’s first female premier on December 2, 1988.

This was stated by PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on his official twitter account on Saturday.

“2 December 1988: #PPP elected the world’s youngest PM and the Muslim world’s first female PM,” the former premier’s son tweeted.

At time of oath taking, she was the first woman to rise to such high office in a country that only a few years earlier had passed a law to reduce the status of a woman’s testimony in court to half that of a man.

During her political career, Bhutto inspired millions of others all around the globe, not just with her unbelievable ascent to power but also with her political intellect and her personality that refused to cower before the toughest of opponents.

Benazir Bhutto’s assassination

Benazir was assassinated on December 27, 2007, in Rawalpindi, while campaigning for general elections scheduled for January 2008.

Responding to Musharraf’s allegations, Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly and senior Pakistan Peoples Party leader Syed Khursheed Shah asked why did Pervez Musharraf not tell all this before the court when he knew it.

“Musharraf’s statement strengthens the doubt that he is involved in BB’s murder.  Earlier, I may have some doubt, but now it is crystal clear that he is involved in the assassination so he should be brought back to Pakistan and should be tried in Benazir murder case,” he said.
