This year, Japanese animation studio MAPPA made its debut at New York Comic Con, using the opportunity to promote its highly anticipated 2025 release, “Chainsaw Man The Movie: Reze Arc”.
Chainsaw Man The Movie: Reze Arc is set to release in North American theatres on October 24.
The film is the direct sequel to the first season of the popular “Chainsaw Man” anime series, is set to hit U.S. theatres on October 24, following its international release.
At a panel on Sunday, supervising producer Manabu Otsuka, assistant director Masato Nakazono and CGI producer Yusuke Awane attended in person, speaking through a translator. Director Tatsuya Yoshihara and character designer Kazutaka Sugiyama sent messages to the audience but were unable to attend.
“In Reze Arc, a completely new genre is born: Love, violence, action, romance, shark”, Yoshihara stated in a message read by the moderator. The “shark” refers to Beam, Denji’s ally, who can transform into a giant shark-like creature.
He added, “You can feel the thrill and tension throughout the action, while also sensing the preciousness of each character through the romance elements. For Reze Arc, every member of the production team offered up a huge amount of blood, resulting in a movie bursting with energy”.
Sugiyama echoed this sentiment, emphasising the team’s efforts to capture the charm of “Chainsaw Man” creator Tatsuki Fujimoto’s characters. “The action scenes are like an amusement park ride. You can just empty your head and enjoy them”, he said.
Nakazono discussed the importance of preserving the strengths of the TV series while expanding the story. “There are no speaking words between manga panels, so we have to create that”, he explained.
Ensuring the dialogue aligns with the characters’ intimate relationships. He noted that Denji finds Reze incredibly cute and the film aims to evoke similar feelings in the audience.
Tannawa described the film’s visual style, stating, “We want to make sure the 2D and 3D coexist naturally as one visual”.
