‘Heard a lot about good governance’ – CJP summons CM Khattak during Peshawar visit

PESHAWAR: After taking cognizance of public complaints in Karachi, Lahore and Quetta, Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar headed to Peshawar this morning, remarking that he had heard a lot about good governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and summoned Chief Minister Pervez Khattak while hearing issues of public interest at the Peshawar registry of the apex court.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice and comprising Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Umar Ata Bandial, is hearing cases related to safe drinking water, disposal of hospital waste, educational institutes, private medical colleges, at apex court’s Peshawar registry.

“I have heard a lot about the good governance by the government of PTI in the province and today I am here to see it,” he remarked during his visit to the city.

During his visit, he questioned why there was no dumping ground for waste in the city. “You say everything is well in the province,” he asked while referring to the chief minister.

The bench also inquired into the supply of clean drinking water to the public, besides summoning report on the disposal of hospital waste.

Meanwhile, the chief justice also visited the Al Razi Medical College and ordered the Federal Investigation Agency to seize the record of the alma mater for taking high fees from students.

KP Inspector General (IG) Salahuddin Mehsud also appeared in court after he was summoned by the CJP.

During hearing at the Peshawar registry today, the CJP ordered inspector general KP to take back additional security given to essential and non-essential figures. “Those who have all the resources should make their security arrangements themselves,” he said.

The chief justice has also held similar hearings in Sindh and Balochistan and summoned provincial chief executives for explanation.

Earlier this year, the top court had summoned Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif ordering him to explain his government’s position regarding the provision of clean drinking water to people and disposal of the large quantity of untreated wastewater.
