Contempt case: Rana Shamim tenders unconditional apology to IHC

ISLAMABAD: Former Gilgit-Baltistan chief judge Dr Rana Muhammad Shamim has tendered an unconditional apology to Islamabad High Court (IHC) in contempt of court case, ARY News reported on Monday.

According to details, Rana Shamim has submitted an unconditional apology to Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a contempt of court case after he alleged that former chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nasir attempted to influence a case against the Sharif family.

In the apology, the former chief judge noted that he mistakenly wrote down Justice Amir Farooq’s name instead of senior-most judge in the affidavit. “The affidavit was written under extreme mental stress and at the age of 72,” he added.

“Due to these circumstances, I inadvertently made this grave mistake, which I deeply regret now and unconditionally apologise for,” the ex-chief judge maintained.

Rana Shamim claimed that he repeatedly heard the word – senior judge – from former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar. He further said that he cannot even think of scandalising the judiciary, adding that he has shown deep regrets from the beginning of these proceedings.

The former judge reiterated that no sitting judge of this court was involved in the controversy. “I tender an unconditional apology to all sitting judges for the grave misunderstanding,” he added.

In May, Rana Shamim had challenged his indictment in contempt of court case in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

He had filed an intra-court appeal assailing an IHC single bench’s January 20 decision of indicting him in the contempt case.

The applicant had stated that the single bench indicted him only, while those who hid affidavit were given clean chit which is illegal. He had pleaded with the court to set aside his indictment and quash the case.
