ISLAMABAD: The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) has declared the task of controlling overpopulation as the second most important issue after the construction of dams.

During the hearing of a suo moto case on overpopulation issue, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar resented that the campaigns for controlling population explosion were not being run properly.

As the hearing went underway, the Supreme Court-mandated committee proposed the bench to form a task force on national and provincial levels.

The required resources for the nation were depleting fast, the chief justice remarked, adding that the issue of water scarcity was escalating, “if we don’t fulfill our responsibility then we will become culprits of our coming generations.”

Quoting the examples of Iran and Bangladesh where the issue of overpopulation was handled in a fine manner, the top judge ordered to air the recommendations on the television.

The top court has further sought response from the federal and provincial governments on the matter.

In the previous hearing of the case, Justice Nisar expressed his concerns that resources and housing space are falling short in Pakistan owing to population bomb. The matter should be tackled by the help of effective policy-making from the federal government which must be followed on provincial level.
