ISLAMABAD: Following his five-year disqualification just a month before elections, PML-N leader Daniyal Aziz appeared before the media after court verdict and denied the charges leveled against him under the contempt of court order.
Speaking to media here, Aziz said he will pursue the legal battle against the court verdict after going through the detailed judgment.
The Supreme Court on Feb 7 had issued to Aziz a notice for contempt of court for an “anti-judiciary” speech made by him.
After the ban on contesting elections, Aziz announced that his father (Anwar Aziz Chaudhry), would contest elections in his place from the same constituency (NA-77, Narowal).
“There are no charges against me of corruption. I am the one who formulated mechanism to run local government system,” he said.
He said TV channels showed in their survey that I enjoyed considerable support in my constituency. “We didn’t attack Islamabad after court verdict and never attempted to undermine state institutions.”
He recalled that his rivals are facing at least three cases each in the National Accountability Bureau.
“I appeared before the court in a single case and I’ve been cleared in it,” he told the media
On March 13, the SC had indicted Aziz in the contempt case. The proceedings were held under the Contempt of the Court Ordinance 2003, read with Article 204 of the Constitution, against Aziz for making derogatory and contemptuous speeches and statements against the apex court.
