Delegates from 26 countries to attend APA conference starting today in Gwadar

ISLAMABAD: Around 100 delegates from 26 countries are going to attend the APA Conference starting on Monday in Gwadar and hosted by the Senate of Pakistan.

A two-day conference of the Committee on Political Affairs of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) will be held in Gwadar from 29 to 30 October.

97 delegates from 26 countries including, Thailand, Syria, Indonesia, Jordan, Samoa, Afghanistan, Lao Republic, Cambodia, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, East Timor, Russia, Bhutan, Iran, Lebanon, Qatar, Oman, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, China, Sri Lanka, Iraq and Azerbaijan are scheduled to attend the conference. Representatives of the International Parliamentary Union and Asian Parliamentary Secretariat will also be present.

The Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace grew out of the collective desire and concerted effort of legislators and members of civil society in Asia to promote peace in general and in the Asian region, in particular, says a press release issued by the Senate.

Born in 2006 at the Seventh Session of the Association of Asian Parliamentary for Peace (AAPP), the APA comprises 42 Member Parliaments and 16 observers.

Earlier, the Chairman Senate said that Gwadar is the future economic hub of the country and the purpose of holding of international conference is to highlight economic importance of Pakistan as well as giving a message that Pakistan is a peaceful country with enormous investment potential.

He said the new city of the Gwadar is being established as a centre of economic activity for the whole region.
