"It's time to #DeleteFacebook," tweets WhatsApp co-founder

Following the Facebook security breach scandal, Brian Acton, the co-founder of WhatsApp, a company now owned by Facebook, took to Twitter to express his ‘surprising’ thoughts on Facebook.

Brian Acton added his voice to Cambridge Analytica backlash, as the company is being investigated for mishandling of data. Facebook’s stock price is down more than 11% since last week wiping almost $50 billion off the valuation of the company when it became public knowledge that personal data of tens of millions of Facebook users was being misused.

The tweet caused quite a sensation on social media and #DeleteFacebook campaign started trending on Twitter where several media outlets guide its users on how to permanently delete your Facebook account.

Neither Mark Zuckerberg nor the chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, has made any public statement about the scandal, attracting further criticism over a lack of leadership. Nor were they present at an all-hands meeting for employees at Menlo Park earlier in the day, led by the company’s deputy general counsel, Paul Grewal.

Acton was an engineer and executive at Yahoo before he co-founded WhatsApp in 2009 until Facebook bought the messaging app in 2014, making Acton a multi-billionaire, Acton left the establishment November last year.
