Democracy could survive only with justice: CJP

LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan has said that the country has been infested with the non-state actors who don’t believe in the supremacy of the law, ARY News reported on Saturday.

Addressing a gathering at Lahore Registry of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani said that the democracy faces several challenges in the country and only justice could ensure survival of democracy in Pakistan.

He said intolerance has been on the rise, which is harmful but the democracy also faces other threats in Pakistan.

The non-state actors could pose threat to the democracy, but justice could ensure survival of the system, the chief judge said.

The chief justice called for restoration of confidence of the people over the system of justice. He said the rule of law comes into force with sentiments, not with words only. He said the judiciary will act according to its oath at any cost.

Supreme Court Judge, Justice Umar Atta Bandiyal in his speech said that the civilized societies respect law and judges speak only with their judgments.

A large number of high court judges and senior lawyers attended the gathering.
