At least three killed as 6.6 magnitude earthquake jolts parts of Pakistan

According to US Geological Survey, an earthquake with magnitude 6.6 occurred near Feyzabad, Afghanistan. The quake struck at 3.58 pm and went on for several minutes.

Its epicentre lay 39 km from Ashkasham in Afghanistan. The impact was strongest across a 200 km area. At least three people have been reported killed whereas several others have been injured due to the jolts.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed federal, civil, military and respective provincial institutions to provide all relief to the victims of the earthquake.

In Pakistan, the quake tremors were felt in parts of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Shangla, Lahore, Chitral, Gujrat, Khyber Agency, Muzafarrabad, Sargodha, Silakot, Mianwali and other cities. The tremors lasted for around 30 seconds.

The earthquake reportedly caused widespread panic across the region with people saying that it caused major alarm. Many of them took to social media to share the terrible development. Residents in several Pakistani cities in the country’s north said that they could feel the buildings that they were in sway.

The jolts were felt in New Delhi and India-occupied Kashmir as well.

National Disaster Management Authority has issued a warning after the jolts, saying aftershocks could also hit the country after these tremors.

A powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude had struck major cities of Pakistan, leaving at least 276 people dead and injuring over 1300 people in October last year. The quake was also felt in the neighbouring countries of the region.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially measured the quake’s intensity at 7.7 then revised it down to 7.6 and later to 7.5.
