ISLAMABAD: Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser on Saturday said the purpose behind releasing captured Indian pilot Abhinandan was to ease the escalating tension between the nuclear-armed neighbouring countries, ARY News reported.

“The government of Pakistan did what it had to do for peace in the region,” Asad Qaiser said while talking to ARY News.

He condemned Indian forces’ ceasefire violations and targeting innocent civilians across the Line of Control (LoC). He said the Kashmir conflict should be resolved according to the resolutions of the United Nations.

“You cannot enslave somebody and steal his rights. It will be better for India to hold plebiscite as per wishes of Kashmiri people,” he said.

The speaker NA said the game, that India was becoming part of, was in favour of neither.

He said Pakistan was a nuclear country and it had played its role as a responsible state.

On February 27, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) after striking down two Indian fighter jets had arrested one pilot, who ejected himself after being hit in the airspace of Pakistan in Azad Jammu and Kashmir — something that came as an unexpected setback for India.

Hours after shooting down the IAF jets, Pakistan military had released a video statement of the captured Indian pilot.

The situation between the two neighbouring countries had turned hostile in a tit-for-tat airstrikes following the Pulwama attack that killed over 40 Indian troops in occupied Kashmir on Feb 14.
