Adiala Jail superintendent, deputy superintendent removed

RAWALPINDI: Senior staff posted at the Adiala Central Jail in Rawalpindi were replaced on Saturday, apparently following pictures of meeting of deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif and imprisoned Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi’s in jail leaked.

The pictures had gone viral on social media in which the two incarcerated PML-N leaders could be seen in poor health condition.

According to a notification, Superintendent Mansoor Akbar has replaced the previous jail superintendent of Adiala Central Jail. Deputy Superintendent Malik Liaquat was also suspended as Officer on Special Duty (OSD).

They have been directed to report to the Punjab Prisons Department for further orders.

Sources of the jail said a provincial minister was unhappy with both the officials after the picture was leaked.

The PML-N leader, who is serving life sentence in ephedrine quota case, was seen meeting Mian Nawaz Sharif in jail superintendent’s room on September 19, hours after Islamabad High Court suspended jail sentence awarded to former PM, his daughter and son-in-law.

After the picture was leaked, Hanif Abbasi, was shifted to a prison in Attock from Adiala Jail on the recommendation of the two-member inquiry committee.
