KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has finalized the name of Arshad Hassan as the party’s candidate for the upcoming election of Karachi’s deputy mayor, quoting sources, ARY News reported on Saturday.

Five candidates of different political parties had submitted nomination papers on Friday to contest the election of deputy mayor.

Two MQM-P candidates Arshad Hassan and Mansoor Ahmed had filed their nomination forms.

According to sources MQM-P has finalized the name of Arshad Hassan for the slot of deputy mayor.

Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Karamullah Waqasi had filed his nomination papers for the office of deputy mayor yesterday.

A candidate each from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had also filed their papers.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) last week announced that the election of deputy mayor Karachi will be held on April 18.

The office was vacated due to disqualification of Arshad Vohra for switching party loyalty after being elected to his position. His former party MQM-P had approached the election commission to de-seat Vohra for switching loyalty to the Mustafa Kamal-led Pak Sarzameen Party.

According to the ECP schedule, final list of the candidates will be released and allotment of election symbols to the candidates will be announced on April 11.

The ECP will announce the result of the election on April 19.

Over 300 members of Karachi’s City Council will use their right to vote to elect the new deputy mayor of the city.
