Balochistan Assembly elects Sarfraz Bugti for Upper House

QUETTA: Sarfraz Bugti of Balochistan Awami Party stood victorious in the elections for the general seat of Senate left vacant by Mir Naimatullah Zehri.

Former home minister Balochistan garnered 37 votes from the Balochistan Assembly against his contender Rehmatullah Kakar backed by opposition alliance who secured 20 votes.

Five members vied for the coveted seat, in addition to Sarfraz Bugti and Rehmatullah Kakar, Amir Rind, Allauddin Marri and Mir Ghulam Dastagir contested the polls as independent candidates.

The general seat of the Senate fell vacant as Mir Naimatullah resigned from the post.

A total of 57 out of 61 members of the assembly cast their votes in the election.

Within no time, the new Senator-elect took to Twitter to express his gratitude to the ally party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the leadership of his own party.

He tweeted “Alhumdulillah! Thankful to Allah almighty for giving me the opportunity to represent #Balochistan in Senate, Pakistan. It was made possible by the trust reposed in me by the people of my province and the political leadership of @BAwamiParty and @PTIofficial.”
