Bollywood actress Sridevi passes away

DUBAI: Veteran Bollywood actress Sridevi passed away on Saturday night after a cardiac arrest, ARY News reported.

Family sources confirmed that the ‘Mom’ actress was in Dubai for a wedding when suffered a cardiac arrest. “Yes, it is true that Sridevi passed away. It happened roughly around 11:30 pm. I don’t have more details yet,” Indian media quoted Sanjay Kapoor as saying.

She is survived by husband Boney Kapoor and daughters, Khushi and Janhavi Kapoor. The Kapoor family was in UAE to attend the wedding ceremony of Mohit Marwah.

Before entering Hindi films, Sridevi worked in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She began her career as a child actress back in late 1960s and won the state award for best child artist for Malayalam film Poombata (1971).

Born as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, Sridevi made her debut in Bollywood with movie Julie in 1975.

She rose to fame after films like Sadma, Chandni, Himmatwala, Mr India and Nagina. She went on to become one of the biggest female stars India ever had.

The government of India awarded her Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour in 2013. With a 15-year break from movies after working in Judaai, she returned to win hearts with popular flick English Vinglish in 2012.
