ECP announces by-election schedule on seat vacated by Arif Alvi

KARACHI: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday released the schedule for the by-election on the National Assembly seat vacated by President Dr Arif Alvi.

The provincial election commissioner Sindh has appointed Hyderabad election commissioner Imtiaz Ali Kalhoro as the returning officer for the by-polls.

The by-elections for NA-247 Karachi (South II) will be held on the October 21. A public notice in this regard will be issued on September 12. The nomination forms will be submitted between September 13-15.

By-elections will be also he held for the PS-111 Karachi (South V) seat in the same constituency vacated by Governor Sindh Imran Ismail.

Dr Arif Alvi, a prominent leader of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, won the NA-247 constituency in the July 25 general elections. Alvi won the seat with 91,020 votes with a wide margin against other candidates.

However, Alvi vacated the seat to contest for the presidential elections. He won the presidential election securing 352 votes, and was sworn is as the 13th president of Pakistan on September 9.

Imran Ismail won the PS-111 seats with 30576 votes, but also vacated the seat after he was nominated as the Governor Sindh.  He was sworn in as governor on August 27.

Earlier, the ECP announced that by-elections in 37 constituencies will be held on October 14 on amended voters lists, which are being issued to the districts concerned.

The by-polls will be held for 11 National Assembly and 26 provincial assembly seats. A number of the national and provincial assemblies seats fell vacant after political leaders who had won more than one seats in the general elections resigned from all seats but one.

There are also a few constituencies where elections were not held due to the demise of candidates or some other reasons. Candidates can withdraw from the electoral race by September 15 while those contesting will be allotted election symbols on September 16.
