Around 780 black tortoises were left on the bank of the lake in presence of the officials of Sindh Wildlife Department and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The Wildlife Department of Sindh had captured 780 turtles in a joint raid with police in Karachi’s Defence area on last Friday.

The police had also arrested nine people including three Chinese nationals over the charge of smuggling of the turtles.

The wildlife department officials had stated that the turtles recovered in the raid having a minimum cost of Rs. 50 million in the international market.

It is pertinent to mention here that the tortoises have been among the list of endangered species and their trade is prohibited under the international conventions.

The authorities had earlier also reported smuggling bids of turtles and tortoises from Sindh and Punjab, which were destined to smuggle to Malaysia and other far eastern countries.
