116 cases disposed of through speedy trials in model courts: report

ISLAMABAD: At least 116 cases have been disposed of through speedy trials in model courts across the country, ARY News reported.

Director General Monitoring Cell of 116 Model Courts Suhail Nasir has issued a report in this regard.

“Verdicts of 43 murder cases and 73 narcotics cases have been announced. Aggregately, fine of more than Rs5.605 million have been imposed,” the report said.

The report said two suspects were given death sentence.

It said four cases of murders and one of narcotics were disposed of in Islamabad. While, 12 cases of murders and 33 of drugs were settled, it added.

Six cases of murder and seven of drugs have been decided in Sindh. While, 14 cases of murder and 17 of drugs have been disposed of in Balochistan, the report said.

The report said 13 convicts had been given life sentence across the country. Statements of 662 witnesses had been recorded in the country, it said.

The report has been submitted to the chief justice of Pakistan.

On March 18, the Sindh High Court had approved formation of model courts across Sindh.

The SHC registrar had issued a notification for setting up model courts in the province.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khan Khosa on March 11 had said under the ‘Expeditious Justice Initiative’, model courts would be established at district level throughout the country which would conduct the trials on day to day and continuous basis.
