KARACHI: “People are sick of heavy taxes being imposed on petroleum products,” Chief Justice reprimanded concerned authorities, on Thursday, while hearing the suo moto case against the imposition of extra taxes on POL products.
In Karachi’s registry of Supreme Court, Chief Justice (CJ) Saqib Nisar questioned about the law that determined the price of per liter of petroleum products. “Authorities will be answerable to each tax being levied on POL products,” he stated.
Discontent with the briefing given by the deputy managing director of Pakistan States Oil (PSO) on the matter, the top judge expressed suspicion over the process by which POL products are imported.
The apex court has called Secretary Petroleum, Secretary, Ministry of Energy and chairman Federal Board of Revenues (FBR) to appear before the court. Whereas, managing director of PSO and other officials are summoned tomorrow (Friday).
CJP has also sought records pertaining to the imports of petroleum products and fuel price determination for the last six months.
