IMF delegation shares initial assessment on economy with Asad Umar

ISLAMABAD: A delegation of International Monetary Fund (IMF), chaired by Harald Finger, on Tuesday met with Finance Minister Asad Umar and shared its initial assessment on various sectors of the economy, following the  interaction with officials of relevant ministries and entities.

According to a statement released from the ministry, Asad Umar briefed the delegation about PTI government’s vision on economy and referred to the corrective measures being taken to remove imbalances in the economy.

Talking to the delegation, he said that the new government had come to power with an agenda of wide ranging reforms. The minister said that the government has a strong resolve for implementing deep structural and institutional reforms.

 “It is committed to safeguarding the poor and vulnerable segments of the society and shall invest more in social protection, human development and creating employment opportunities”, he added.

Along-with structural and governance reforms, revival of domestic industry and export sector are high priorities of the government, reads the statement.

The minister said Pakistan looked forward to receiving IMF support for government’s efforts aimed at achieving an economic turnaround.

Federal Minister for Finance Asad Umer called on International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Lagarde, on October 11, to formally request the global body for providing financial assistance to cushion the sinking economy of Pakistan.

Governor State Bank Tariq Bajwa and other officials of Economy Division were present during the meeting.

IMF Chief also confirmed the news of meeting with the Minister and other Pakistani officials and said in a statement, “During the meeting, they requested financial assistance from the IMF to help address Pakistan’s economic challenges.”
