LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday gave Punjab police 36 hours’ time to arrest the culprit behind the rape and murder of 7-year-old Zainab in Kasur.

Headed by Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, a bench of the high court was hearing a case pertaining to legislation to avert recurring of the incidents of child abuse.

The chief justice directed the provincial police chief to submit a comprehensive report on the Kasur and other similar incidents that have occurred in the province.

He further directed the IG to apprise the court of details of the cases of child abuse and headway made in these cases.

An unfortunate incident occurred in Kasur, which has worried and disturbed everyone, CJ Shah remarked during the hearing.

He said he had heard that several such incidents had taken place in the province and summoned details of all such incidents from the police.

The IG told the court that it has come to his knowledge that the DNA samples obtained in six sexual assault cases have been found to be of the same man, lending credence to the suspicion that a serial rapist was involved in all the cases.

The chief justice directed the police to make all out efforts to arrest the culprit involved in the rape and murder of Zainab within 36 hours.

The IG assured the court that the suspect would soon be arrested.

The hearing was adjourned till Monday.
