Khalilzad holds meeting with FM Qureshi, briefs progress in Doha peace talks

ISLAMABAD: United States Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad in a meeting with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi briefed him about progress in the Afghan peace process on Friday, ARY News reported.

Khalilzad also informed Pakistan’s foreign minister about recent meetings in Afghanistan and progress made in Doha peace talks.

Qureshi said Pakistan wishes well for the peace and stability in Afghanistan, which will directly benefit the country’s own vision for economic and human development.

The foreign minister,reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the Afghan peace process. He said that intra-Afghan dialogue is a vital component of the reconciliation process in the country.

Ambassador Khalilzad, earlier had delegation level talks with Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua at the Foreign Office.

During the talks with Pakistan also expressed its concerns with the US delegation.

The Foreign Secretary briefed the US envoy about telephonic conversation between Foreign Minister Qureshi and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi n a telephonic conversation with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had asserted that Pakistan was facilitating the US-Taliban peace talks and assuring its support for intra-Afghan dialogue.

The two sides agreed to remain engaged to pursue the reconciliation process.

Earlier, the US Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation with a delegation, visited the Foreign Office in Islamabad to hold talks.
