The amended legislation has ended panel system in local councils elections allowing each citizen to contest polls as an independent candidate.

The amendments in Sindh Local Government Act 2013 empowers the election commission to make delimitation of the constituencies. The delimitation of a union council, union committee and ward will be made on the basis of the revenue block.

According to the amended law the chairman and vice chairman will be joint candidates and will be elected with ‘show of hand’.

In union councils and union committees four general councillors will be elected from each ward. The councillors of the women, labour and minorities will be elected on the union council and union committee basis.

The legislation bill moved by Dr. Sikandar Mendhro was passed after a heated debate in the house. Opposition Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) and MQM suggested amendments in the bill but the house rejected all PML-F amends. The amendment proposed by the MQM however made part of the bill.
