Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman

Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman has been the chief of the orthodox Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F).

Born in 1953 at Abdulkhel, Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, Rehman hails from an influential political family. His father Mufti Mahmud was an influential cleric who served as the chief minister of NWFP (Now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) in 70s.  Rehman studied at a local Madrassa in DI Khan. 

Fazal-ur-Rehman was accepted at the University of Peshawar in graduation classes, where he graduated and earned B.A. degree in Islamic Studies in 1983. 

Rehman went to Cairo, Egypt, after being accepted at the Al-Azhar University and researched in  theology under reputed religious and divinity research scholars.

In 1987, Rehman completed and published his master’s thesis on political aspects of Islam and was awarded M.A. degree in Religious Studies. 

Rehman’s name rose to prominence as a political leader in 1988. His influential role in regional policy relating the Jammu Kashmir and Afghanistan gained him much support and clout. 

Rehman served as Leader of the Opposition from 2004 to 2007 during which period he was the Secretary General of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA)- a coalition of religious political parties, which also formed provincial government in NWFP province. 

The coalition of the religious right parties however crumbled in 2008 general elections as a number of members decided to boycott the polls. Rehman joined hands with the PPP, which formed a coalition government after emerging as the largest political party in the National Assembly. Fazal-ur-Rehman’s JUI-F extended its support to Yousaf Raza Gillani-led PPP government.

The Pakistan People’s Party in May 2013 general elections defeated by rival Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Nawaz Sharif-led centre-right party won the majority in the parliament. Fazal-ur-Rehman’s JUI-F joined the PML-N led government in the centre and currently has been a member of the ruling coalition.
