Maulana Samiul Haq laid to rest in Nowshera

NOWSHERA: Chief of his own faction of Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam, Maulana Samiul Haq, was laid to rest in Akora Khattak area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province’s Nowshera district on Saturday, ARY News reported.

Religious scholar and former senator Maulana Samiul Haq was buried alongside his father Maulana Abdul Haq in Nowshera’s Darul Uloom Haqqani, the religious seminary he served as patron-in-chief after his father’s demise.

The influential religious scholar’s funeral prayers were offered in Nowshera’s Khushal Khan Degree College.

Politicians, known religious scholars, and a large number of his followers and students offered the funeral prayers of the influential cleric who was stabbed to death at his Rawalpindi residence last night.

The First Information Report (FIR) of Maulana Sami’s assassination, registered at the Airport Police Station, nominates unknown suspects and states that he received a total of 12 wounds on his stomach, heart, forehead and ears.

An investigation is underway and police have interrogated his domestic staff and have sent blood samples, fingerprints obtained from his bedroom for forensic examination.

The brutal assassination

Samiul Haq, 82, was assassinated in a knife attack at his residence in Rawalpindi on Friday night.

Speaking to ARY News, Maulana Samiul Haq’s son Hamidul Haq had said that his father was stabbed to death in his bedroom. The deceased’s son said his father was unwell and taking rest at home when he came under the attack.

He said Maulana Sami ul Haq’s driver and gunman were away when he was stabbed and added that when one of his servants returned he saw his father lying in a pool of blood.

Samiul Haq was shifted to the Safari Hospital in Rawalpindi for medico-legal formalities where he succumbed to his injuries.

About Maulana Samiul Haq

Maulana Samiul-Haq belonged to the spiritual family of Akora Khattak where he was born in 1936. A holder of Sanad-e-Fazilat-o-Faraghat and Sanad Daura Fafseer-e-Quran from Darul Aloom Haqqania, Akora Khattak and Sheik-ul-Hadith (Honorary) of Deo Band, Maulana Sahib imparted religious education at his almamater, to the students and held important positions in the academic and administrative staff of the Darul Aloom.

As a member of Jamiat Ulma-e-Islam, he conducted, with success, the election campaign for his father Maulana Abdul Haq in 1970,1977 and 1985 and assisted him in carrying out his obligations as a Member of the National Assembly.

He was an active protagonist of Tahreek-i-Khatam-e-Nabowat in 1974 and Tahreek-i-Nizam-i-Mustafa in 1977. He remained a member of the Majlis-i-Shoora in 1983-85 and was a member of the Presidential Committee on religious matters.

He was elected to the Senate in 1985 and was one of the principal movers of the historic Shariat Bill in the Senate. He was re-elected as Senator in 1991 for another six year term.
