KARACHI: Police on Saturday arrested the mother of an eight-month-old girl for faking the minor’s abduction while handing her over to a relative without her family’s knowledge, ARY News reported.

According to details, the woman was arrested after police recovered the minor girl named Faiza from one of her relative Imran Abdul Qadir’s  house in Yousuf Goth area of the Karachi.

The suspect- who told police that he was the minor’s guardian- and the mother were presented before a judicial magistrate today where the police sought their remand.

The suspect Imran Abdul Qadir, however, changed his statement before the magistrate and said that he was Faiza’s father so the woman handed her over to him without her family’s knowledge upon which the the magistrate ordered that DNA tests be conducted of the child and her parents.

The court sent the woman and her accomplice Imran Abdul Qadir to jail on a judicial remand till October 3. The court ruled that the infant will stay with her mother in jail.

The case background

The minor girl named Faiza’s mother had claimed on September 12 that the girl was abducted by a veiled woman who snatched the minor from her hands outside her third-floor apartment within the precincts of Napier police station.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered on the very day but police who doubted the family’s claim today recovered the child from a house in Yousuf Goth area.

The girl was recovered from one Imran Abdul Qadir, a relative of girl’s family, who claimed to have taken custody of girl as a guardian. The suspect added that the girl’s mother called him to her apartment on September 12 and willingly gave him the girl’s custody for “better upbringing”.

Addressing a press conference regarding the incident of kidnappings in Karachi, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Javed Alam told media that the suspect maintained that the girl’s mother had not taken into confidence other members of her family about the incident so had to portray it as kidnapping.

The police officer added that rumours are doing rounds about alleged kidnappings of children from outside schools but so far no case has been reported.
