Nawaz Sharif files new petition for early hearing of bail plea
ISLAMABAD: A new petition has been filed by incarcerated former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Supreme Court (SC) seeking early hearing of his bail plea on medical grounds, ARY News reported on Monday.
The petition appealed the top court to fix hearing on priority basis citing worsening health condition of Nawaz Sharif. The Supreme Court was sought to fix hearing of his petition in this week, the petition stated.
It was also stated that a petition had been rejected by the top court which was filed to fix hearing on March 6.
Following the rejection of previous plea, counsel of the former premier submitted another petition for fixing early hearing on the bail request on medical grounds.
On March 4, the Supreme Court (SC) had rejected the plea filed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for early hearing for his petition seeking suspension of sentence on medical grounds in Al-Azizia reference.
While rejecting the plea, the petitioner had been asked to wait for his turn until the top court fixed hearing on the petition seeking suspension of sentence on medical grounds.
Moreover, the high court on Feb 25 had rejected Sharif’s plea seeking suspension of sentence in Al-Azizia reference on medical grounds and later he was taken back to Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail.
The IHC division bench, comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani, dismissed the plea, stating that the bail cannot be granted on medical basis.
“Nawaz Sharif is not suffering from any disease which cannot be treated in Pakistan,” the bench observed. The high court had reserved the verdict on Nawaz’s plea on February 20.
