NEW DELHI: A legislator from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party Gyan Dev Ahuja has sparked a controversy with a statement saying that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was not a Pandit as he used to eat beef and pork.

In an ANI video, he was heard saying, “Nehru was not a Pandit. One who ate beef and pork, cannot be a Pandit. We know that pig is unholy for Muslims, and the cow is pure for us.”

According to Indian media, Ahuja has sparked many controversies earlier as well with his statements on several issues.

Amidst the growing number of lynching cases in Alwar district of Rajasthan in the name of cow vigilantism, Gyan Dev had earlier commented saying that cow slaughtering is a bigger crime than terrorism as cows are treated as mothers in India. Any ‘misbehaviour’ with them cannot be tolerated.

Jumping into the fray, in February 2016, BJP MLA Gyan Dev Ahuja had said that the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has lost its sheen and has become a place for anti-nationals where students “dance naked” after 8 pm as part of cultural programmes.

Indian Express reports that the MLA has studied till class 12, while he claims on his profile description that he’s a journalist.
