ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Qamar Zaman Kaira on Monday said the opposition parties should remain united to hold the government accountable, ARY News reported.

“The opposition parties made extensive efforts to bring their joint candidate for presidential election but unfortunately could not reach a consensus,” he said while addressing a news conference along other party leaders including Chaudhry Manzoor and Nayyar Bukhari in Islamabad.

Qamar Zaman Kaira said no one had any objection over the personality of the PPP’s nominee Aitzaz Ahsan but there was a reservation that the PPP should have consulted the other opposition parties before proposing name of Aitzaz Ahsan.

“The media misreported on this issue after we proposed Aitzaz’s name in a meeting for presidential polls. Some channels reported it that we had ‘nominated’ Aitzaz for the post, which was incorrect,” he said.

‘Media misreported on Zardari, Faryal Talpur’s appearance before FIA’

Regarding appearance of Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarian President Asif Zardari and PPP leader Faryal Talpur before the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Monday in a money laundering case, Qamar Zaman Kaira said some television channels misreported on it.

“Some media channels reported that the questionnaire was leaked ahead of his (Zardari’s) appearance before the FIA and he was asked such and such questions,” he said.

He said no questionnaire was handed over to Asif Zardari. He said it was a kind of preliminary hearing and he was not asked even a single question, whatsoever.

Kaira said since 2008 the former president had no link with Zardari Group. “He is practically not chief executive of Zardari Group, however, Faryal Talpur was overseeing all the matters and she would respond to all the queries.”

He said Talpur’s status in the case was of a witness, not an accused.

Speaking on the occasion, Chaudhry Manzoor said that the PPP had no compulsions about nomination of candidature for the presidential elections.

He said the cases against the PPP leaders were made by the PML-N leadership.
