Pakistan Army, Rangers dewater 18 flooded areas in Karachi

KARACHI: Pakistan Army and Sindh Rangers on Friday completed dewatering of 18 flooded areas in Karachi, while dewatering of seven other areas is still underway.

Military forces were called in for rescue and relief activities after torrential rains lashed different parts of Karachi. Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Air Force also took part in relief operations.

Pakistan Army and Rangers completed dewatering of 18 areas including Liaqatabad underpass, Gharibabad underpass, Orangi Nullah, Gujjar Nullah, Ayesha Manzil, Power House Chowrangi, Sultanabad Manghopir, Surjani Town Block 4D, 5 Star Chowrangi, Kabali Town Block-5, Petrol Pump Chowrangi, Nauras Chowrangi, Old Golimar Chowrangi, Sohrab Goth Underpass, Nagan Chowrangi and Karimabad.

While dewatering of seven other areas is under progress. The areas yet to be cleared of water include Nazimabad underpass, Golimar Chowrangi, North Karachi UC-13, Landikotal and Saadi town.

The teams of military and paramilitary troops are busy round the clock to assist the civil administration in clearing of areas affected by rain.

The city administration had sought the assistance of the Pakistan Army after several areas were submerged after heavy downpours the metropolis.

Chief of Army Staff General Qammar Javed Bajwa had assured to provide all possible support to the people of Karachi.

The army chief has also directed that the army will provide water extraction pumps to drain out water from the city and effectively manage the torrential rainfall.

Downpour wreaked havoc on the power supply system and municipal infrastructure as electrocution and falling billboard incidents left at least thirteen people dead in various parts of the city.

The situation further turned even worse due to flooding of low-lying areas as the Meteorological Department forecast new spell of monsoon rain till Friday coupled with thunderstorm.
