ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly opposed and condemned the United States’ decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over Syrian Golan Heights.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal said the decision represents a serious violation of United Nations Charter, international law and UN Security Council Resolutions.
“It also constitutes a serious blow to the Rule of Law and international norms.”
The Foreign Office further said Pakistan shares the international outrage and is deeply concerned over the potentially grave repercussions of US decision for the region and beyond.
Pakistan calls upon the UN Security Council to take cognizance of this situation and take steps in accordance with the UN Charter, the statement asserted.
Reuters reported on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation officially granting U.S. recognition of the Golan as Israeli territory.
The move, which Trump announced in a tweet last Thursday, appeared to be the most overt gesture by the Republican president to help Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had been pressing Trump for the move since February 2017.
Israel captured the Golan in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in 1981 in a move not recognized internationally.
