ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Monday rejected National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) review petition on the top court’s verdict of dismissal of appeal regarding reopening Hudaibiya Paper Mills case.

A three-judge special bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam and comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Mazhar Alam Miankhel took up the review plea and announced to dismiss the NAB’s petition.

The bench observed that the arguments of NAB’s prosecutor was heard in detail, however, he failed to highlight any flaw in the court’s verdict, adding that the review petition was filed as a political weapon.

On December 15, 2017, a three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam had dismissed NAB’s appeal to reopen the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case against ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and members of his family.

The NAB had then filed an appeal on the apex court’s decision.

In the review petition, the anti-graft body has pleaded for a probe into the multi-billion corruption scam which inflicted heavy losses to the national exchequer.

The anti-graft watchdog through its prosecutor general Waqas Qadeer Dar had filed the appeal, pleading the top court to grant leave to appeal to examine the legality, and propriety of the 2014 LHC verdict quashing the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case and set aside the impugned judgement.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif, Shamim Akhtar, mother of Nawaz, Shehbaz and late Abbas Sharif, Maryam Safdar, Hussain Nawaz, Hamza Shehbaz, Hudaibiya Paper Mills Ltd and others were named as respondents in the appeal.
