SC to take up petition seeking new JIT in Model Town incident today
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Monday will take up a petition seeking new joint investigation team (JIT) to probe into the Model Town incident.
According to the details, a two-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, will hear the plea seeking formation of a new JIT to investigate the Model Town case.
The apex court issued notices to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz among 139 nominated in the case lodged by the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) regarding the 2014 Model Town incident.
Sources said that National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore received the court notice and finalized all necessary arrangements to produce Shehbaz Sharif before the apex court today (Monday).
It is pertinent to mention here that chief justice of Pakistan, on October 6, had taken suo motu notice on the plea of Bisma Amjad, an aggrieved woman of the incident.
PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri, on October 6, had showed up before a Supreme Court bench as it took up a case related to the Model Town carnage.
The three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, was hearing a petition filed by Bisma, one of the affectees of the Model Town incident, at the apex court’s Lahore registry.
The PAT chief pleaded the bench to constitute a new joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the Model Town incident afresh.
He contended that it is important to constitute a new probe team as the matter couldn’t be fairly investigated in the past. The accused were themselves complainants in the previous JIT and he didn’t expect to get justice from the partial inquiry team, he added.
